Malta from a Japanese perspective

Malta Traffic Information (Taxi)

f:id:Maltalover:20200614151706j:plainIs there any transportation other than public buses?

Malta is a car society where more than half of the people own cars.
Due to the small land area, street parking is common and parallel parking is common.

The morning and evening commute to school is rush hour. You should give yourself extra time to get ready. It takes 30 minutes without traffic and often takes an hour or more. Since there are many one-way streets, it may be a little difficult for beginners to rent a car. Malta, like Japan and the UK, is on the left.

Except for public buses and cars (including motorcycles), the means of transportation are as follows.
・Rent-a-car *I have never rented it, so I will omit the explanation.
・Taxi
・Ferry
・Sightseeing tour bus (Hop On Hop Off Bus, etc.)

This time I would like to write about taxis.

There are not many cruising taxi. There are two major taxis.
There are general taxis and taxis booked with apps like Uber.

[General taxi]
Basically, taxi fare is determined by area.
15 € from the airport to Valletta and 20 € to Saint Julian Sliema. (As of August 2020)

① Hotels
Please tell the destination at the front desk and have them call you. Pay the fee at the front desk and take a taxi when you arrive.

② Airports and downtown areas (Valletta, Paceville, etc.)
There is a TAXI ticket sales office. Tell them where to go, arrange a taxi and pay the fare. I will get a taxi ticket at this time, so please show this ticket to the taxi driver. Ask your sales representative about which taxi to take.

③ Location without TAXI ticket office (taxi stand available)
Please confirm the price with the taxi driver in advance. Pay the driver the fee when getting off. Higher prices may be offered, so please refer to the price list in the above URL to negotiate to avoid trouble. It may be a carpool. In that case, please check the price in advance.

[Taxi for dispatch app]
There are two companies in Malta. eCabs and Bolt. There is no Uber. I don't think there is much difference in how to use them. eCabs are not found on the island of Gozo. Bolt can also be used in Gozo.
How to use
① Download the app,
② User registration,
③ Enter the pickup location and destination.
④ A taxi nearby will be picked up and the fare will be displayed.
⑤ Make a reservation if you like.
⑤ When the pick-up taxi arrives, take a taxi,
⑥ Pay when getting off (you can pay with a credit card at the time of reservation)
The price is fixed for eCabs and approximate for Bolt at the time of booking.

The price is a little higher than a general taxi (a few euros), but I think there will be less trouble because negotiation is unnecessary. Buses are hard to come by in some areas, so it's convenient at that time.

While studying abroad, there was an eCabs office near my school, there was a student discount, and I could make a reservation there, but I was using Bolt 😂
